Tacoma Boosts Public Trash Can Availability to Enhance City Cleanliness

By John Thompson |

The City of Tacoma's Tidy-Up Tacoma initiative is expanding public waste receptacles throughout the municipality to foster a cleaner, safer, and more attractive urban landscape for residents and visitors alike.

As part of this effort, 120 additional waste containers will be strategically placed in high-traffic zones, including commercial districts, guided by data on litter accumulation, service requests, pedestrian movement, and equitable distribution across neighborhoods.

"Our community has consistently expressed a desire for improved public spaces," shared Lewis Griffith, Solid Waste Division Manager at Tacoma's Environmental Services. "This expansion directly addresses those concerns and empowers everyone to contribute to maintaining Tacoma's cleanliness."

To ensure sustained upkeep, two dedicated Solid Waste personnel will handle installation, repairs, graffiti removal, and general maintenance of the new infrastructure.

Residents seeking new trash can placements or reporting issues can utilize the Tacoma FIRST 311 portal for seamless service requests.

Funding for this project comes entirely from the city's existing Solid Waste Excise Tax, allocated in the 2026-2027 budget cycle—no tax increases or additional fees apply.
