Tacoma's Forward-Thinking Economic Roadmap Unveiled
On December 16, the City Council formally adopted Resolution 41823, launching a transformative Community & Economic Development Strategic Plan designed to foster equitable prosperity for both residents and enterprises.
"This blueprint marks a decisive shift toward precision-driven economic advancement," stated Mayor Victoria Woodards. "Our commitment to targeted industry support, revitalizing commercial districts, and enhancing governmental transparency positions Tacoma for resilient, long-term expansion."
"Crafting this strategy demanded extensive collaboration," added Deputy Mayor Kiara Daniels. "As committee chair, I'm honored to have guided this initiative, which prioritizes small business empowerment and meaningful job creation. Our goal remains clear: ensuring every resident accesses living-wage opportunities within thriving neighborhoods."
"The plan's neighborhood-centric vision excites me profoundly," expressed Council Member Olgy Diaz. "By cultivating connected, inclusive spaces, we're building communities where potential flourishes—both economically and culturally."
Addressing current challenges in commercial real estate, the document outlines pathways for adaptive reuse of properties and strengthens ties between owners and municipal resources. Operational transparency and human-focused metrics anchor its implementation framework.
Complementing existing initiatives in housing and cultural sectors, the plan will shape a forthcoming Community Economic Development Action Plan set for completion Q1 2026. Key pillars include:
- Revolutionizing Housing & Commercial Property Development
- Driving Job Growth & Economic Resilience
- Strengthening Civic Collaboration Networks
- Enriching Placemaking Through Arts Integration
Progress tracking will monitor owned metrics (business retention, grant allocations), monitored indicators (local trend analysis), and influenced outcomes (private investment, employment statistics).
