Tacoma's Beyond the Bin Program Expands Community Reuse Opportunities in 2026

By Rachel Fowler |

Tacoma's municipal Solid Waste division is broadening its Beyond the Bin initiative for 2026, offering expanded avenues for locals to contribute gently used household goods rather than discarding them.

This program features a network of complimentary drop-off events where residents can deliver items slated for reuse. Collected materials are then channeled to community-focused nonprofits, ensuring functional belongings stay within the local economy instead of ending up in disposal sites.

Throughout the year, 26 such reuse events will occur weekly from April through September, hosted every Friday at the Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Facility between 9 AM and 4 PM—or until capacity limits are reached.

Collaborative efforts involve established organizations such as Goodwill of the Olympics & Rainier Region, Habitat for Humanity, Northwest Center, Northwest Furniture Bank, and Second Use, all working to redirect donations back into community use.

Aligned with Tacoma's sustainability objectives, this initiative directly supports the city's Climate Action Plan targeting waste minimization and resource efficiency.

"Our previous Beyond the Bin efforts successfully diverted thousands of pounds of reusable goods from landfills," shared At-Large Council Member Kristina Walker. "This year, we're excited to see even greater participation. Every Friday starting April, community members can easily declutter while supporting local nonprofits through thoughtful donation practices."

"With Tacoma generating roughly 378,000 annual tons of waste—nearly half destined for landfills—we urgently need accessible solutions to repurpose usable items," noted District 1 Council Member John Hines. "By partnering with trusted nonprofits, Beyond the Bin makes responsible disposal simple while enriching our community fabric."

"At its essence, Beyond the Bin gives discarded objects renewed purpose," explained District 2 Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh. "Residents gain peace of mind knowing their unwanted possessions find new homes through ethical channels rather than polluting landfills—a win-win for both people and planet."
