Sustainability Small Grants

The Sustainability Small Grant initiative is presently paused because of internal administrative matters. We regret any disruption and appreciate the understanding of those planning to apply.

Grants up to $5,000 are available for qualifying sustainability projects in Tacoma. Preferred proposals will show clear environmental protection, restoration, cleanliness, safety, and livability improvements. Additional points go to projects supporting the local economy, social fairness, and tackling climate change effects. Educational efforts on eco-friendly habits are encouraged and collaboration is welcomed. New applicants might receive priority consideration.

Eligibility is limited to nonprofit entities and individuals; for-profit businesses cannot apply.

Absolutely—anyone can apply regardless of organization. Grant funds must be reported on personal taxes, and reimbursement happens after project completion.

No mandatory insurance at application, but City Risk Manager will assess requirements post-approval. Certain projects—youth, seniors, disabled—require specific coverage; marine and auto liabilities apply depending on activities.

Project commencement is flexible, but pre-award costs aren't reimbursable. Award date sets reimbursement timelines.

One grant per 12 months; unawarded or rescinded grants allow reapplication. Delayed or canceled funded projects also permit future applications.

These are groups facing systemic disadvantages or heightened climate vulnerability, including frontline communities impacted hardest by climate change.
