Sustainability Small Grants
The Sustainability Small Grant initiative is presently paused because of internal administrative matters. We regret any disruption and appreciate the understanding of those planning to apply.

Grants up to $5,000 are available for qualifying sustainability projects in Tacoma. Preferred proposals will show clear environmental protection, restoration, cleanliness, safety, and livability improvements. Additional points go to projects supporting the local economy, social fairness, and tackling climate change effects. Educational efforts on eco-friendly habits are encouraged and collaboration is welcomed. New applicants might receive priority consideration.
Eligibility is limited to nonprofit entities and individuals; for-profit businesses cannot apply.

Can individuals (not affiliated with an organization) apply for and receive grant funds?Absolutely—anyone can apply regardless of organization. Grant funds must be reported on personal taxes, and reimbursement happens after project completion.
What insurance is needed?No mandatory insurance at application, but City Risk Manager will assess requirements post-approval. Certain projects—youth, seniors, disabled—require specific coverage; marine and auto liabilities apply depending on activities.
Can I start work before receiving the grant?Project commencement is flexible, but pre-award costs aren't reimbursable. Award date sets reimbursement timelines.
How often can I apply?One grant per 12 months; unawarded or rescinded grants allow reapplication. Delayed or canceled funded projects also permit future applications.
What expenses are covered?Funds cover approved budget items like materials, transport, equipment. Prohibited: electronics, drugs, alcohol. Refer to full guidelines for details.
Reimbursement processStarting in 2026, vendors must register in SAP Ariba. Invoices upload directly via platform; no email submissions accepted. Assistance available post-award.
When will funds arrive after submission?Funds come 30 days post-invoice approval, paid to the grant recipient listed on contract.
No regular computer/internet?Absolutely—staff will help arrange accommodations. Contact via email or phone before applying.
Benefiting Environmental Services utilitiesProjects improving stormwater, waste reduction, recycling, or wastewater care contribute positively to Tacoma’s environment and infrastructure.
Climate adaptation/mitigationProjects helping Tacoma adjust to or lessen climate impacts qualify—think flood control gardens or cleaner transit promotion.
Understanding frontline communitiesThese are groups facing systemic disadvantages or heightened climate vulnerability, including frontline communities impacted hardest by climate change.
