Like numerous individuals nationwide, I share profound dismay regarding the tragic loss of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis and the recent violent encounters involving federal officers in Portland. Disturbing accounts of excessive force by federal personnel highlight a troubling pattern of disregard for local community safety standards. These events compel me to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with grieving families, advocates demanding transparency, and civic officials seeking accountability during these heartbreaking times.

Within Tacoma, we recognize that genuine public security stems from mutual respect between neighbors and between citizens and municipal governance. Such confidence flourishes through local engagement, not imposed from distant authorities. Amidst national uncertainties, our city continues nurturing this essential trust. During challenging periods, Tacomans demonstrate unwavering solidarity—affirming our commitment to every resident, irrespective of citizenship status.

Remaining silent when confronted with unchecked federal authority and threats to neighborhood well-being cannot be justified. Consequently, I endorse the City Council's passage of Resolution 41627 and Resolution 41817, which restrict municipal assets from supporting federal immigration enforcement activities. These measures establish a vital boundary separating local law enforcement responsibilities from federal immigration priorities.

As mayor, my obligation lies solely with Tacoma’s populace. I pledge to safeguard constitutional liberties, oppose governmental overreach, and ensure decisions concerning communal welfare and responsibility stay rooted within the community itself.
