Celebrating Community Impact: 2026 MLK Event Highlights

By Emma Powell |

Event Highlights: Service, Recognition, and Unity

The City of Tacoma’s Events and Recognitions Committee (CERC) proudly presents the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 19, 2026. Attendees will witness the presentation of the Lifetime Service Award to Uncle Boy Chun Fook and the Emerging Leader Award to JD Davis. The program will also feature Kwabi Amoah-Forson’s dynamic hosting and a vibrant community outreach fair. The event starts at 1 p.m. at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center (GTCC), situated at 1500 Commerce St., Tacoma.

This year’s theme, Community in Service: A Path to Action, emphasizes collective effort in uplifting Tacoma. Through narratives and performances, the celebration will honor everyday contributors who embody Dr. King’s values of justice and unity. Participants are invited to consider how their actions, no matter how small, can advance his enduring legacy.

Local groups interested in joining the outreach fair should submit applications by January 5, 2026. Details and the application form are available at tacomavenues.org. The CERC coordinates all aspects of the event, ensuring a meaningful tribute to community service.

“CERC is honored to recognize those who enrich our community through dedication,” shared Cydney Stephens, CERC Sub-Committee Chair. “This year’s theme reinforces that every act of kindness propels Tacoma forward, fostering a connected, compassionate city.”
